I have traded in my cinnamon bears for a semi-temporary fancy for skittles. They are just the funnest little buggers. I confess that my first encounter with skittles(this year) was at work when I spied them on. . . a desk. I took one, then two and maybe just a smidgen more. It was at this point when I realized how AMAZING they are. Fruity and tiny and sweet and wonderful. I personally will only accept the highest quality of original flavored ones.
So this leads me to my point. Where did skittles come from and the who is the genius behind them?
Skittles are produced and marketed by Mars, Incorporated. Which is owned entirely by the Mars family. I couldn’t find the exact inventor as I bet it was a colaborative effort but credit goes to Forrest Edward Mars, Sr. (who invented M&M;’s) for the credit of getting them to the US market.
They were “invented” in 1973 but didn’t make it to the US til 1982. Today they are also made in the Czech Republic and Victoria, Australia. If you visit their website, skittles.com, they have made the move to social media i.e. Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter.
For those of you who care to know (and or didn’t already figure it out), the inside is mainly sugar and hydrogenated vegetable oil along with fruit juice, citric acid, and natural flavors. Taste the Rainbow!!!
